Characteristics of a Good Medical Professional

What makes a good medical professional? There is no one answer. Certainly, physicians should be educated, trained, and knowledgeable, but that’s not all. Simply being knowledgeable and qualified is not enough.

There are certain characteristics that a medical professional should have. A good doctor should be the following:

  • Personal: A doctor should interact with a patient as more than just a patient and be interested in the patient’s condition and what he or she has to say.
  • Direct: A doctor should speak in plain language in a direct manner. This is not to say that a doctor must speak like an average person, but a doctor should speak in a way that non-physicians can understand. Also, a doctor should avoid dancing around a subject and instead address it directly.
  • Confident: A doctor’s confidence can give the patient confidence.
  • Understanding: A doctor should be empathetic to the feelings of the patient.
  • Humane: A doctor should be direct, but perhaps soften the blow of potentially bad news with some compassion.
  • Thorough: A doctor should be thorough and persistent and ask all the questions that need to be asked as well as answering all the questions the patient has.
  • Respectful: A doctor should take their patients and their issues seriously.
  • Friendly: A doctor should be friendly in order to ease a nervous or embarrassed patient.
  • Knowledgeable, Trained, and Educated: A doctor should be all of these. They are as important as the rest of the listed characteristics.

Those interested in healthcare employment should keep these characteristics in mind.

People are sometimes at their worst when seeing a doctor. They may be nervous, concerned or embarrassed about their reasons for being there. A doctor with the above characteristics can alleviate a patient’s discomfort.

Medical Professionals Are in Demand

If you’re considering changing career, you’ll want to find something that you can do even in a down economy. Right now, there’s a demand for medical professionals. If you go to school to be a nurse, for example, you can pretty much be guaranteed a job, even though the economy is struggling. The baby boomers are aging, and they need medical care. Because there are more people in the system – and because people are living longer – it’s important to have enough people to care for them. More nurses are also doing some of the things doctors traditionally did, because there are fewer family practice doctors.

If you get into medicine to make money, you’ll want to specialize in something. If you get into it mostly to help others, you may want to consider family practice. That way, you’ll be filling a need and still getting to do what you want to do. If you’re not interested in actually being a doctor, nursing can be the way to go. Of course, there are a lot of other jobs you can do in the medical field. Keep your options open, but remember to consider something that is needed, so you’ll have a job when you graduate.

For a lot of people, going to school can seem difficult. The good news is that a lot of people can go to school for a short period of time. Many medical programs are measured in months, not years, so that can make it feel less daunting. You may also be able to take some or all of your classes online, depending on what career you choose. Some jobs will require clinical work, but others won’t. Keep that in mind, too, when you consider which career you want to focus on. If you’re determined, you can find something that matches your schedule and goals.
